Irpinia Montemarano

A blanket of trees covers the green Irpinia, one of the most beautiful and rich lands in Italy environmentally speaking, with parks and natural oasis, mountains and plateaus rich in springs, lakes, rivers, falls, caves, forests... Irpinia's colours and odors invite to walk in a untouched environment, through itineraries that reveal beautiful landscapes with its imponent mountains, its rivers, its valleys.
Through the treasures of its landscape, Irpinia discloses a millenarian heritage in culture and art: Etruscans, Greeks, Romans, Goths. Longobards: diverse dominations have been across these lands and their memories survive in Roman and Lombard ruins, austere catacombs, baroque monuments.
Irpinia's territory is as well famous for its glorious wine tradition: this is the land where DOGC wines such as Taurasi, Greco di Tufo e Fiano are produced. These wines are able to elevate local gastronomic peculiarities: quality products and traditional recipes are trademark of an excellent cuisine.

Irpinia is rich even from an anthropological and ethnomusicological point of view. In particular, the town of Montemarano represents the location where the most insane and complex tarantella dance take place. The streets are crowded with maskers who embody the fascination of "sounds", clarinet, squeeze box, drums and castagnette mix in an hypnotic ritual where music opens the dances, the dance is fused with the land beaten by dancing feet , in a magnificent example of functional osmosis.
Fragments of collective trance underline this striking ritual momentum in which only the night concludes the professional coreo-musical orgy: a community that dances, the dance as the community's soul.
